Interiors 2001
Winner - Interior Construction
A growing number of grandchildren and a desire to accommodate everyone at the holidays and other family events, led these owners to enlarge their existing den. The result was a 20' X 30' space. Sliding glass doors were replaced by heavy oak pocket doors, and a new closet and deacon’s bench helped add space to the foyer. This addition also included a full basement and crawl space area. Other special details in this project include a corner wood stove with brick surround, wood beams and deep archways. The room also created a great place to display a variety of hunting trophies.
2001 Interior Construction
Winner - $20,000 to $30,000
This winning entry solved a problem of space related to a narrow staircase and second floor hallway. The correction involved the removal of part of the second floor wall to create the feeling of a landing. Carpet and vinyl from the bathroom was replaced with deep, mahogany-stained maple hardwood flooring in order to tie the bath, hallway and staircase together. The bathroom was gutted and renovated in a Victorian style and lots of upstairs details were added throughout the second floor to tie together the entire project.
2000 Interiors
Winner - Interior Construction
The traditional basement in this home had an existing entry leading to the backyard pool. This space was remodeled to create a family room with bar area, full bath, and an extra finished room that could be an additional bedroom or home office. Custom cabinetry was designed to blend with the bar and a double-hung window was installed and backlit to give the lower level a 'first floor' feeling. The judges were impressed with the warmth and functionality of this newly created living space.
2000 Exteriors
Winner - Exterior Construction
This typical 1960's ranch home had deep overhangs on the eave side of it's roofs and no overhangs on the gable ends. The house and it's garage were not cosmetically attached. In this external facelift, colors were chosen that blended well with the existing brick. Overhangs were added to the gable ends and a new porch was built. All new dimensional sizes were increased to give this home the curb appeal it really deserved.
Major Renovation 2000
Winner - More than $250,000
Outstanding workmanship, creativity and design were among the comments of judges in this project. The original farmhouse, which had been remodeled twice before, was ready for this final effort. Renovation included a garage, as well as the removal of one of the previous additions and the creation of new living space on all four sides of the home. Care was taken, however, to maintain the integrity of the original exterior trim designs. Renovation included:
- Greenhouse/Sunroom
- Master Suite
- Kitchen/Dining Area
- 3.5 Baths
- Sewing and Laundry Area
- Den with Balcony
- Rear Deck and Additional Front Porch
1995
Winner - Recreational Construction
This impressive lakefront deck on a 65 foot bluff behind a Walten Woods home presented many unique challenges. Even after seeking advice from the Army Corps of Engineers, whose recommendations were not encouraging, these homeowners decided to go ahead with construction of this massive deck which required the assistance Erie Weld Products. The three-level deck consists of sitting area at the top, from which steps descend to the middle level, complete with built-in benches. From there the stairs descend to the lowest level, a 20' by 30' deck which has access to the water by way of a retractible steel ladder developed by Erie Weld. Landscaping on all sides was completed by Jim Brainard Custom Landscaping.
